DDH Stories – Jacqui’s Story
We have just (today) finished our journey in a hip brace. We are thrilled that our daughter’s hips are fixed and she no longer has to wear the brace. Your page was such good support, thank you.
Here is Lucy’s Story:
Lucy nearly ticked all the boxes for being at risk of hip dysplasia. She was my first child, a girl and breech for my whole pregnancy.
The morning after she was born, the paediatrician picked up Lucy’s uneven skin folds on her thighs and booked in an ultrasound. At 6-weeks she was put into a Denis Browne brace.
I was devastated; I cried and cried. She had to be in the brace 23/7, so having a bath and kick for an hour each day was special. It was summer so it was tricky to find clothes to fit that weren’t too hot. After 6 weeks in the brace, we had our second scan and we were told her hips were perfect. As a precaution she just to wear the brace at night for 6 weeks.
The next scan revealed that her hips had regressed, we were back to wearing the brace 20 hours a day. This time around I was more relaxed and the brace didn’t bother Lucy or myself. Our latest scan showed that Lucy’s hips are fixed; we are thrilled. No more brace night or day. We don’t see the doctor again for 6 months.
